Curtis J. Wolf, manager of Kansas Wetlands Education Center. Cheyenne Bottoms is a must-see destination for anyone interested in birds! This area is the largest interior wetland in the interior of the U.S. and provides some of the most critical shorebird habitat in the entire Western Hemisphere. Curtis will discuss the import role Cheyenne Bottoms plays thru videos, photographs and recordings of some of the unique avian visitors that call it home. He will also introduce us the KWEC, an often overlooked but excellent resource for natural history education.
We will be hosting our speaker for dinner at Bo Lings on the plaza prior to the meeting at 5pm
Hope to see you there!!

Join Mark Land as we look for year-round residents, such as Pileated Woodpecker, and fall migrants in the woods and wetlands around the area's several pools. In addition, we'll stop at La Cygne Lake (Linn County Park), a man-made, warm water lake which is made so by its role as water source for the nearby power plant. We'll also drive through the (strip) mined land area south of the power plant to look for open grassland species. Plan to bring lunch and/or snacks for this all day trip. Meet at 7:00 a.m. at the Price Chopper on the northwest corner of 119th Street and Metcalf in Overland Park for carpooling. This trip will have minimal walking and is mainly an auto tour. Tuesday, October 4 at 6:45pm at the Anita B. Gorman Discovery Center auditorium. Kansas City Wildlands with support from Burroughs Audubon and The Westport Garden Club through Garden Club of America have sponsored several botany studies at KC Wildlands site, Jerry Smith Park. Jerry Smith Park is the only known, unplowed prairie left in Jackson County and is maintained by Kansas City Wildlands and KCMO Parks and Rec. Justin Thomas and his team have surveyed this last remnant for an inventory of plant species.
The prairie once covered vast areas of North America and is now one of the least preserved, most endangered ecosystems. Justin Thomas has over 17 years of botanical field work divided between The Nature Conservancy, Missouri Department of Conservation, the National Park Service, Dunn-Palmer Herbarium, William Sherman Turrell Herbarium, and the Missouri Botanical Garden. Learn about the prairie plant community in Missouri and what we have preserved in Kansas City.
Also of interest, Mike Arduser will be presenting the results of his bee survey of Jerry Smith Park and Rocky Point Glad on Tuesday, November 1 at 6:45pm at the Anita B. Gorman Discovery Center.

Who has more species of native bees on their urban, remnant habitat- Kansas City or St. Louis?
Come find out on November 15 at 6:45pm at the Anita B. Gorman Discovery Center auditorium. Kansas City Wildlands with support from Burroughs Audubon and The Westport Garden Club through Garden Club of America have enlisted renowned bee expert, Mike Arduser, to survey bee species, populations and prefered plants on wildlands sites in the Kansas City. MO Parks district. Jerry Smith Park, a 40+ acre, never plowed prairie, and Rocky Point, a preserved and restored limestone glade in Swope Park, are the sites for the bee surveys. Midway through the season, Kansas City comes in with an astonishing 75 bee species! including some very specialized bees that are found only on these undisturbed sites.
The same surveys are going on in St. Louis and we are anxious for the KC wildland sites to come out on top with the most number of bee species supported. Data from these surveys will not only give us a baseline for management of these ecologically significant locations, but also determine best plant species to be included in future restoration areas.
Come for the unveiling of the results- how many bee species, which bee specialists we have in the KC area and what plants the bees prefer.
Also of interest, Justin Thomas from the Institute of Botanical Training will be presenting the results of his botany survey of Jerry Smith Park on Tuesday, October 4th at 6:45pm at the Anita B. Gorman Discovery Center. -
