Plant a Tree
by Alan Myers, Burroughs Audubon Board of Directors
The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit.—Nelson Henderson
In the 1970’s, a teacher in the Kansas City, Kansas school system by the name of Lena Feighner planted many trees, at least figuratively. She had no idea that the property that she donated to Burroughs Audubon Society would be the basis for the preservation of Snowball Hill Prairie; the placement of Motus (bird tracking) towers in Kansas and Missouri; an annual contribution to Missouri Bird Observatory, Audubon of Kansas, and Conservation Federation of Missouri; as well as the placement of “Adventure Packs” in area libraries; and many other bird-related conservation projects.
Dozens of individual donations over the years have allowed Burroughs Audubon to continue to “plant trees,” and as we approach the end of another year, many of us are considering where to send our annual charitable contributions. If you are interested in making an impact on local conservation and birding issues, Burroughs Audubon of Greater Kansas City is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that can help.
Most of the donations that we receive are in the form of checks or PayPal donations, often contributed in the memory of a friend or loved one.
Checks can be mailed to:
Burroughs Audubon Society
7300 SW West Park Rd
Blue Springs, MO 64015
Some of the donations that we have received are from individuals who are 70.5 years of age or older and have given directly from their individual retirement account (IRA). Your financial or tax advisor can help you determine the extent of tax savings that this form of contribution might provide.
If you would like to donate appreciated securities or publicly traded stock, we can put you in touch with our friends at the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation who can help with the transaction.
No matter how you would like to “plant at tree,” we sincerely appreciate your support for local conservation efforts.
For more information about how you can help, please feel free to contact us by phone 816/795-8177 or send an email to our Treasurer.
