Lights Out for Safe Bird Migration in Spring and Fall

Every year, billions of birds migrate north in the spring and south in the fall, the majority of them flying at night, navigating with the night sky. However, as they pass over big cities on their way, they can become disoriented by bright artificial lights and skyglow, often causing them to collide with buildings or windows. Read more about Audubon's Lights Out program to help provide a solution to the building/window strike problem. In Missouri, the Heartland Lights Out program is a collaboration of organizations from the heartland area of the USA that is partnering to reduce light pollution during bird migration periods. Heartland Lights Out is spearheaded by the Missouri Chapter of DarkSky International.

Preventing Bird Fatalities by Working with Building Management

BirdSafeKC is a collaborative project between the Missouri River Bird Observatory, Burroughs Audubon Society of Greater Kansas City and the sustainability coordinator at Johnson County Community College. Our aim is to reduce bird collisions with windows throughout the KC metro area. We survey buildings to determine the most collision-prone windows and work with building owners and managers to implement cost-effective solutions.

Audubon Conservation Ranching Initiative

To combat the negative effects of grassland degradation, and to keep grass on the landscape, Audubon has developed a market-based conservation approach offering incentives for good grassland stewardship through a certification label on beef products. For the first time, consumers can contribute to grassland conservation efforts by selectively purchasing beef from Audubon-certified farms and ranches. Read more.
