About Burroughs Audubon

About Burroughs Audubon

Burroughs Audubon is the Greater Kansas City Chapter of the National Audubon Society. Burroughs was formed as a nature club in 1919 and became a chapter of the National Audubon Society in 1971. Burroughs Audubon promotes the appreciation of birds and nature, natural history education, and the conservation of habitat.

Activities for All
In addition to guided field trips, general meetings with informative programs/speakers, and special events, Burroughs Audubon also offers citizen science activities such as bird banding, the Great Backyard Bird Count, and Christmas Bird Counts. Our activities are usually available at no cost and are for all ages to enjoy.

Nature Center and Library
The Burroughs Audubon Nature Center and Bird Sanctuary at Lake Jacomo in Fleming Park is open most weekend afternoons. We have a very large natural history library that is free for you to use while onsite. Bring your binoculars or borrow ours and spend some time watching birds at the outside feeders from one of our two indoor viewing areas. Look for birds and butterflies in the Esther O'Connor Wildflower Prairie on the property.

Membership
When you join National Audubon, you are automatically considered a member of Burroughs Audubon. We receive financial support from National Audubon based on its membership, but we also appreciate the generosity of our local friends through donations, gifts, and volunteer hours.

Leadership
Our board of directors, committee chairs, and members work hard to provide all these things for you. We have so much to offer and look forward to having you join us!
