Did You Find a Baby Bird or Wild Animal?

Immature American Robin by Galawebdesign

Spring means baby birds are hatching and young mammals are being born. Should you happen to find a young bird or animal without its parents, you may be tempted to try to help it, but that isn't always necessary. Often the parent is nearby and will return for the young one. If you're unsure what to do, call Lakeside Nature Center (816/513-8960) in Swope Park for animals in Missouri or Operation Wildlife (785/542-3625) for animals in Kansas. This guide has details for many wildlife species about whether or not to rescue. Cornell Lab also has information about baby birds. Make sure pets and children are kept a safe distance away from the young bird or animal.
