SUMMARY:Birding at Blue Springs Lake Wetlands
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a morning of birding at Blue Springs Lake & Wetlands. We’ll meet at 8 AM in the parking lot above the wetlands by the dam for a quick scan of the lake before heading down to the wetlands. We will explore a variety of habitats—lakeshore\, marsh\, and woodland edges—in search of migrating songbirds\, lingering shorebirds\, and anything else that flies our way. This area can be productive in mid-May\, offering a nice mix of warblers\, vireos\, flycatchers\, and water-loving species.\n\nExpect easy walking on paved and gravel trails. Bring binoculars and comfortable walking shoes. All birding levels are welcome\, and you’re free to leave whenever your schedule requires.\n\nDirections coming from the south west: take Exit 14\, Bowlin Road\, off of I-470. Take a right and go east on Bowlin Road past the convenience store on your right and through the stoplight to NE Campground Rd on your left (hard to see\, comes up fast). Turn left and follow the road toward the campground. At the campground entrance turn left and follow the road to the dam. Drive across the dam- you’ll be able to see the parking lot next to the dam on your right.\n\nDirections from the north: take Exit 16A US Highway 40\, off of I-470. Take a left and go east on US 40-Corporal Webster Memorial Parkway for 2.4 miles and turn right onto Tapawingo Lane/Turkey Hollow Rd. Take an immediate right on Lake Ridge Rd for half a mile and you will see the parking lot next to the dam on your left.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a morning of birding at La Cygne Reservoir and Wildlife Area as we explore prime habitat for flycatchers\, vireos\, warblers\, and many other Kansas migrants and summer residents. With nearby lake headwaters\, we also have a chance to spot waterfowl and egrets. \nWe’ll meet at 8:00 AM at the parking pull-off on Rockville Road\, north of 399th Street. From Highway 69\, take the 399th Street exit. Travel approximately 2 miles east to Rockville Road\, then go about 1 mile north to the parking area. \nWe’ll be walking a mile or more along county roads and roadside right-of-ways. Gravel roads may be wet\, and nearby drainage ditches could hold standing water. Pants and footwear treated with Permethrin or DEET are recommended to help prevent chigger bites. \nPlease bring binoculars\, water\, and weather-appropriate clothing. Birders of all skill and experience levels are welcome. SUMMARY:Birding in Eastern Kansas Wetlands
DESCRIPTION:This trip is focused on searching for shorebirds\, waterfowl\, and whatever else is present in one of these two eastern Kansas counties wetlands. We will meet behind the bus stop in front of Price Chopper at the corner of 119th and Metcalf at 7am to carpool south. Expect a mile or more of walking on this trip as we stop at various locations.\n\nUPDATE – We will be visiting Marais des Cygnes Wildlife Area. For anyone coming from an area other than KC\, you can also meet us and Chris at the Trading Post Rest Area around 7:55. This is at the intersection of Hwy 69 and 52 in Linn County.\n\n{We plan to focus either on Browns Wetland and Antioch Marsh near Hillsdale Lake or Unit F and Unit G at Marais des Cygnes Wildlife Area. The choice of where will likely be made close to the field trip date.}\n\nThe trail to the lake at Browns Wetland and Unit F are usually not well kept and it is advised to wear pants and footwear sprayed with Permethrin or DEET to keep chiggers at bay. Bring scope and binoculars\, water\, and appropriate clothing. SUMMARY:Raptor Roll at Loess Bluffs Wildlife Refuge
DESCRIPTION:Sally Urdang\, a Master Naturalist with the Osage Trails chapter\, is our host for this birding field trip\, which includes the option of riding your bike ride around the refuge. We will meet at the Visitor Center at noon. \nDrive your car through the refuge or bring a bike if you’d like to ride around the 10 miles of gravel roads. If you are choosing to ride a bike\, your bike must be in good\, working order\, as this is a self-supported bike ride. We also suggest you ride a bike that has mountain bike-sized tires on it\, or is a gravel bike. We’ll be looking for Bald Eagles\, raptors\, Snow Geese\, Trumpeter Swans\, sparrows\, and more. \nPlease bring your own lunch/snacks and your own binoculars\, or Sally will have a few on hand as extras.
