UPCOMING MEETINGS January 3, 2012 -- "A Jewel of the Great Plains: The Hutton Niobrara Ranch". Ron Klataske, Executive Director of Audubon of Kansas, will give us a tour of this magnificent 5,000-acre area in the sandhills of northern Nebraska -- home to Sharp-tailed Grouse, Long-billed Curlews, Bobolinks and many other creatures of the prairies, woodlands, and wetlands. The sanctuary has been managed by AOK for almost 10 years and is a centerpiece of their Great Plains Conservation Partnership. February 7, 2012 -- "The Secret Life of Missouri's Salamanders" with Jeff Briggler. While we search the trees and sky for birds, there is another fascinating group of creatures living beneath our feet. In Jeff's 11 years as Herpetologist in the Missouri Department of Conservation, he has journeyed from caves to mountaintop glades throughout the Ozarks to study our native salamanders. Join us for his lively discussion of their habits -- mating, communication, migration, and more! March 6, 2012 -- "Native Plantings for Birds" with Alan Branhagen, Director of Horticulture at Powell Gardens. Native plants offer the best sources of food, shelter and nesting habitat to attract birds to your property. If you don't want your yard to be a "dead level of monotonous, songless, tameness" (Eloise Butler in The Wild Gardener), then attend this program for some great ideas on what you can plant for a place that sings with our 'spirit of place'. April 2012 -- NO GENERAL MEETING, ANNUAL DINNER ON SATURDAY, APRIL 14. May 1, 2012 -- ANNUAL ELECTION OF BOARD AND OFFICERS. Program: "Down the Road from Rachel Carson: From Hog Island to Where We Are Today" with Jan Alderson, Burroughs member and environmental educator. Jan will discuss the flora and fauna of coastal Maine (especially birds) and her insights from the Audubon workshop "Sharing Nature: An Educator's Week". This program will be of interest to anyone who believes that engaging children with nature is the key to protecting our land, water, and species in the future. Special door prize drawings, and a donation to BAS, will also be announced! Speaker suggestions? Contact Program Coordinator, Elizabeth Stoakes at (816) 554-1956 or *NEED A RIDE?
