Burroughs Audubon Society announces ...

Important Bird Areas Program

The Important Bird Area (IBA) program is a worldwide bird conservation program designed to identify, monitor, and protect those areas most important to birds. The National Audubon Society, in partnership with BirdLife International, began implementing the IBA program in the United States in 1995. There are currently 46 states with IBA programs in various stages of development. Internationally, Audubon's International Alliances Program (IAP) protects the birds and biodiversity of the Americas through local conservation partnerships with Central American and South American communities located in and around IBAs.

In 2002, Audubon initiated the Missouri IBA program which identifies the 47 most important landscapes for bird populations in Missouri. Being centrally located among continental biomes and their transitional zones, Missouri contains a wide variety of avian species from western and northern prairies and wetlands, eastern forests, and southern swamps. Most avian conservation issues in Missouri involve the degradation, loss, and fragmentation of habitat. The Audubon Missouri IBA program identifies these imperiled habitats, their conservation concerns, species affected, and then targets them for on-the-ground community conservation action. May 1-22 - Birdathon 2013
Spring is a wonderful time to visit woods and wetlands to look for migrating birds. This year, bird for a cause! Consider participating in Birdathon by gathering pledges and finding birds, or by making a generous donation. All funds support Burroughs' important conservation and education work.

For information about joining an existing team, or forming one of your own, contact Keith Brink at 816-365-9497 or . Send team information to Marcia Hawk at , then print off an official pledge sheet. As always, thanks for your support!

Congress passed the RESTORE Act in the recent Transportation Bill - a provision to dedicate 80 percent of Clean Water Act penalties from the BP Deepwater Horizon disaster to Gulf Coast restoration. Penalty amounts could range between $5 and $21 billion dollars. Read the statement released by Audubon President and CEO David Yarnold on June 29, 2012. Also, see the report Strategy for Restoring the Gulf of Mexico - Recommendations to the Gulf Coast Ecosystem Restoration Task Force.

We are announcing a new project: An HONOR GARDEN at the BAS Library. Donations made will be used for expanding the native plant gardens, landscaping, beautifying our new water garden, and ongoing maintenance. Donations will honor loved ones and friends, especially our Burroughs members, past and present, with donors and recipients permanently recognized at the BAS Library and Nature Center in Fleming Park. Click here for a donation form, then print and send to: Marcia Hawk, 3616 Saddle Ridge Dr., Independence, MO 64057. The recipient or their family will be notified of your donation. Thank you for your support!

2013 International Year of Water Cooperation

The 2013 International Year of Water Cooperation is a special year declared by the UN General Assembly to raise awareness, both on the potential for increased cooperation, and on the challenges facing water management in light of the increase in demand for water access, allocation and services. The Year will highlight the history of successful water cooperation initiatives, as well as identify burning issues on water education, water diplomacy, transboundary water management, financing cooperation, and national/international legal frameworks. Each year, World Water Day highlights a specific aspect of freshwater. WWD is March 22, 2013.
